Types of counselling include directive counselling, where the counsellor actively advises and suggests solutions; non-directive counselling, where the employee explains the problem and finds solutions while the counsellor facilitates; and participative counselling, where both counsellor and employee jointly diagnose the problem and decide solutions. Participative counselling is often considered balanced and practical.
Counselling process begins with establishing rapport and trust. Then the problem is identified through listening and questioning and its causes are explored. Next, alternative solutions are discussed and an action plan is prepared with mutual agreement.
