Three demographic concepts are:
(Any three concepts like death rate, fertility and mortality can also be written.)
Causes of population growth include:
(Any three causes can be written.)
Population growth means an increase in the number of people over a period of time. It occurs due to several social and economic reasons.
Causes: Firstly, there has been a decline in the death rate because of better medical facilities, vaccination, improved sanitation and availability of medicines. Secondly, in many places early marriage and traditional preference for larger families increase fertility. Thirdly, lack of awareness and limited access to family planning services in some areas also contribute to high birth rates.
Effects: Population growth creates pressure on resources like food, water, land and housing. It increases unemployment and underemployment when jobs do not grow at the same rate. It also increases poverty and reduces the quality of life because education, health facilities and public services become overburdened. Rapid population growth can lead to environmental degradation and rising cost of living in cities.
Thus, population growth affects both the economy and social welfare, and controlling it is essential for balanced development.
